Taking a look at a drunk driving checkpoint in San Jose

You've likely seen them before: the drunk driving checkpoints set up by law enforcement officials throughout San Jose and the rest of California. These checkpoints are designed to find drunk drivers and impaired drivers by forcing them to speak with officers. Let's take a look at the DUI checkpoint and what you can expect if you are ever stuck in one after a night out on the town.

For starters, the officer will request some documents when they approach your vehicle. You will need to provide officers with your driver's license, your auto insurance and the registration for the vehicle. Be prepared to face fines if any of these documents are expired or if you cannot produce them.

The officer will then run your information through the system to determine if you have any arrest warrants in your name. If you don't, the DUI check will continue. If you do, the check will end and you will be taken into custody.

While the officer is speaking with you, he or she will be examining you for signs of alcohol or impairment. These include slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, a flushed face, alcohol smell on your breath or coming from your vehicle, and the presence of any containers of alcohol in the vehicle.

If the officer suspects you are under the influence of alcohol, you will be asked to complete field sobriety tests. If you fail even one of these you could be placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI.

DUI checkpoints are most common during holidays and on the weekends. Even still, officers could set up a checkpoint at anytime of the week. Be sure you know what to expect should you find yourself pulled into a checkpoint in San Jose.
