Bay Area linebackers accused of domestic violence

San Jose pro football fans split their loyalties in different directions. On one side of the Bay are the San Francisco 49ers and on the other side are the Oakland Raiders. On both sides there is a heralded linebacker facing charges of domestic violence.

The 49ers' Reuben Foster was arrested in February and charged with domestic violence, making threats and possession of an assault weapon. Across the Bay, the Raiders released linebacker Aldon Smith after he was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident.

According to news reports, Smith was in an altercation a few days ago, but left the scene before law enforcement arrived. He was apparently identified as a suspect by a victim who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The former Pro Bowl linebacker reportedly checked himself into an alcohol treatment facility after the incident.

Foster's Feb. 11 arrest was his second in a month. The 49ers have come under scrutiny for their handling of the matter.

Cornerback Tramaine Brock was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence nearly a year ago and was released by the team next day. Charges against Brock were dropped late last summer for lack of evidence.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office has not yet said how it plans to proceed in Foster's case. It has until March 13 to decide if it will file charges and if it does, whether the charge will be a misdemeanor or a felony.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said it is possible that Foster will be suspended by the NFL for part of the upcoming season.

Clearly, the careers of the two players are in serious jeopardy. Both also face the possibility of jail time if they are convicted of domestic violence.

Those facing similar accusations and possible penalties can speak with an attorney experienced in protecting rights and freedom in all matters.
